Judge Alex Kozinski said the group's "aggressive and high-profile attacks" on Japan's whaling fleet endangered lives, ordering them to stop. US-based Sea Shepherd has for many years chased the Japanese whalers, attempting to disrupt the annual hunt. Aside from that I thought they'd settled on being merely obnoxious.

Posts: 175 28/02/13 13:31	Whaling is technically illegal under international laws that Japan is nominally signed to. Japan gets away with it under the "scientific research" loophole that allows whales to be killed for research. In years, no significant research has come out of Japan, but whalemeat keeps showing up on the market. it's murder of an intelligent life form for no actual reason beyond using it for meat that barely anyone eats anymore, and as a puerile way to show their independence from Western norms. The hunt costs more than any profit they make at this point. It's sheer idiocy. And they're criminals? Edited 1 time by Dantez 28/02/13 13:38.

Posts: 159 01/03/13 01:10	Whaling is a bad thing, but there are right ways to go about ending it, and there are wrong ways to go about ending it. When you're trying to stop whaling by sinking the whaling ships and thereby killing the people on them, then yes you're a menace. When you attack a search and rescue operation, and don't assist them after you've fucked it up, you're a menace. Sea Shepard is the obvious aggressor here. You can't, as a private citizen, attack someone conducting illegal fishing any more than you can rough-up someone for parking in a handicapped parking space. These people should have been classified as a menace a long time ago. Good riddance.

Posts: 80 01/03/13 07:24	I'm not too concerned about the environmentalists hurting the poor whalers: they operate in fleets, they have lifeboats, they knew what they're getting into, and their managers know what they're doing is illegal. They knew the risks. All they have to do is stop whaling, and everything ends peacefully.

Now if the PETA people want to volunteer in place of the animals I say go for it. I don’t believe some of those people even like animals.
